Vegetarian Restaurants in Chicago

13 Feb

After recognizing pizza and hot dogs and burgers, we need to recommend Chicago’s vegetarian scene.  These restaurants may cut the meat, but the taste is so flavorful that meatless makes the meal.  For any vegan, vegetarian, pescetarian, or food connoisseur in general, you can’t beat these fine establishments…

Our Favorite Vegetarian Restaurants in Chicago

Karen's Chicago Vegetarian Restaurant

Karen’s on Green

Fresh, flavorful and friendly are some words to describe Karen’s on Green.  Kudos to Karen’s for their meatless meat dishes tasting wonderful mostly from their use of seitan (a wheat based meat that dazzles popular items like the chorizo sliders or buffalo chicken), and their menu boasts some of the freshest veggies around (recommended: butternut squash soup).  Karen’s also dazzles with an open and airy atmosphere and weekend brunch is a mere $10-12 a plate. 130 S. Green St.

Handlebar Chicago Vegetarian Restaurant

Handlebar Chicago

Hip bar and terrific vegetarian based food both can be found at Handlebar.  Being “green” is a bit of an understatement at this casual eatery: from freshly brewed fair trade coffee to produce from local farms.  Enhance your Chicago vegan experience with their Chicago Style Tofu: pesto tofu, giardiniera, roasted garlic aioli, dijon, arugula, tomato, celery salt, focaccia (only $9).  Their non-vegetarian items consist of savory fish dishes like paprika shrimp and fish tacos.  Pair any excellent meal choice with one of their beers at 2311 North Ave.

Loving Hut Chicago Vegetarian Restaurant

The Loving Hut

Asian meets vegetarian with glorious results at The Loving Hut.  Gourmet cuisine made with high quality vegan ingredients all while maintaining a low cost, this place should make every traveling foodie’s list.  We love the Run away Potato: spicy potato stew with carrot onion and leek, also served with rice, and another must-try is their Almond Joy crispy battered tvp, broccoli, carrot, cabbage, baked sliced almonds with brown ginger sauce and rice.  Better yet, the average entree is a mere $8 at 5812 N. Broadway Ave.

The Chicago Diner Chicago Vegetarian Restaurant

The Chicago Diner

Meat free since 1983, Lakeview’s Chicago Diner keeps northside vegan bellies full.  The restaurant specializes in recreating popular diner dishes in a healthy vegan method.  The Radical Rueben is a crowd favorite with: corned beef seitan, grilled onions, peppers, sauerkraut, vegan thousand island & cheeze, on marbled rye.  Or go for the traditional diner experience and order a vegan milk shake like the Chocolate Peanut Butter.  The Chicago Diner is located at 3411 N Halsted St.
